Dream Tides is the newest work to join my current series, UNDULATES.
This painting isn't about making a statement or explaining a particular idea. Instead, it is about the physical and sensual experience of painting — the sweeping brushstrokes, the interplay of colour, and the way forms and mood begin to emerge through the process.
I was particularly excited by the rhythm and movement within the painting and the way the colours seem to create both depth and light. There is something about it that evokes an evening landscape, with the suggestion of northern lights drawing me into the distance.
One of my favourite parts of making this work was watching what happened when the colours met. Working wet-on-wet allowed the paint to merge and separate almost by itself, creating unexpected shifts and subtle changes within the brushstrokes. I enjoyed responding to these moments rather than trying to control exactly where the painting would go.
The sweeping marks and changing colours give Dream Tides a sense of movement, as though the landscape is constantly shifting beneath the surface. There is a rhythm to it that feels almost like water, flowing, floating and moving between light and shadow.
For me, this is one of the pleasures of painting. A work doesn't always need to have a fixed meaning or tell a particular story. Sometimes the experience of colour, movement and form can be enough to take you somewhere else.
Art can offer us new journeys, feelings and experiences. I hope Dream Tides invites you to set sail, travelling, floating or simply dreaming.
