THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING
Although this painting came first this wonderful poem serves as a painting narrative. I have used its title for the title of my painting, here is the poem:
HARLEQUIN GEMS
Gems, stones, pebbles and crystal
Are the only assets we gleefully haul
Harlequin wonders on the ground stealthily crawl
But monochrome human eyes rarely enthralled
Red, green, blue, orange and yellow
gems dance in the mid of the meadows
From the rainbows the colors they cling
Blend with sand and river and they do mixing
Some fly, some scramble, and some sleep
Some sing, some dance and some creep
Some make the silent night musical
Some paint the dull place colorful
Failing to fathom these nature's abundant treasures
We miss the chance to relish heavenly pleasures

THE PAINTING'S STORY AND ITS PAINT PLAY
I had four bowls of diluted colour and began this painting by making gentle wash marks and then doing the same with different colours, often overlapping, This process was both tranquil and calming,
I then added bird shapes. I wanted the silver outlines which mark out each of the bird shapes to be intertwining just like the overlapping colours. I then painted the wings and breasts, beaks and heads. The colours were well diluted anda created a wash over the existing pattern pattern. This created a harlequin pattern.
I enjoy poetry and art so this led me (as a poetry lover) to research ''harlequin'' references in poetry. The poem I was most drawn to is above, ''Harlequin Gems'' I have used its title as the title for this painting in its honour.
I painted this tranquil painting with Michael Harding professional watercolours. He is better known for his oil paint range. There is a super vibrancy to this brand's palette which also have a pleasing inky quality similar to some of the Winsor and Newton colours, such as Indigo.
I painted on Arches paper which is a world famous professional grade paper. I was gifted some Arches (rough) and I loved it. Arches rough (the thicker the better) is now my "go to" paper. This paper is made in France and the only one there to use the cylinder mould process, this combined with natural raw cotton means it is of the highest quality and as good as handmade paper.
